The Petroff Defence

The Petroff Defence has traditionally been regarded as a reliable defensive mechanism to counter the aggressive 1 e4. It also has a reputation for being one of the most drawish of all openings and a choice that Black only makes when content to achieve a draw. However, in recent years, this has all changed. A new generation of players, spearheaded by the 2018 World Championship challenger, Fabiano Caruana (whose qualification route was built heavily around the Petroff), are re-interpreting this ancient defence. While recognising the impressive solidity of the Petroff they are honing it into a fine counter-attacking weapon.
Nowadays theory has become so convoluted at the super-GM level that top players want to avoid the main lines more and more. The petroff is a good option, since it hasn't been analyzed and played by super-GMs to such a huge extent. In addition, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the Petroff (objectively, it may just be slightly worse than 2...Nc6).
The Petroff has for a long time been regarded as a verysolid defence. Black avoids the perils of the Scotch, the Italian Game andabove all the dreaded Ruy Lopez, and instead opts to neutralize White'sinitiative with active piece-play. In the Petroff, it is quite common for Blackto launch an early counterattack, often gambiting a pawn to do so. For manyyears, the Petroff enjoyed a steady following, with Karpov, Ivanchuk, Timman,Anand and in particular Yusupov among its supporters at the top level. Since1998, however, the Petroff's popularity has soared, following its adoption byVladimir Kramnik, who has played it regularly and considerably reinforced itstheoretical standing. In this book, Janjgava gives a complete and detailedpicture of the Petroff, taking recent developments fully into account. Readerswill be fully equipped to take on either side of the Petroff with confidence intheir own games.
\"The potential synergies around a deal are ... difficult to quantify as there will likely be political hurdles to closing or consolidating facilities and reducing work force. Still, with a slowing defence spending environment around the Western world, it appears to us a sound move to combine forces and reduce the number of competitors offering similar goods in the marketplace. A similar combination for a single European aerospace giant was attempted more than a decade ago. Should the deal go forward, the company would appear similar in sales mix to Boeing (BA). However, we don't believe this would change the competitive dynamics in the aerospace or defence marketplaces.\" 781b155fdc
